Based in Southern California, Dr. Pierre Long-Tao Tang (鄧朗淘) is a conductor-pianist from Hong Kong with an active international career. He has appeared as guest conductor with ensembles worldwide, including a performance at David Geffen Hall, Lincoln Center, to critical acclaim. He apprenticed under Donald Schleicher and Andrew Megill, and studied with conductors such as Uroš Lajovic, Robert Spano, Osmo Vänskä, and Simon Carrington.
Tang’s engagements include serving as cover conductor for Le Concert d'Astrée under Emmanuelle Haïm. A dedicated educator, he is on the music faculties of the University of California, San Diego, and the University of San Diego, and has previously taught at Pepperdine University. He also leads conducting workshops in Hong Kong and serves as Director of Music at Pacific Palisades Presbyterian Church.
His research on orchestra directorship has been presented at international conferences including the Oxford Conducting Institute International Conference (2019), the California All-State Music Education Conference (2021), and the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (2023). His forthcoming peer-reviewed book chapter will be published by SUNY Press.
As pianist, Tang has worked with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under James Gaffigan and Richard Wilberforce and serves as rehearsal pianist for the San Diego Symphony Chorus and collaborative pianist at UCLA. In chamber music, he performs with Chamber Music Palisades alongside members of the LA Philharmonic and LA Chamber Orchestra. He has also sung with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Master Chorale under Zubin Mehta, and with the San Diego and Montreal symphonies under Rafael Payare.
